As a general rule, we like to avoid cheap “survival” knives with Rambo-like hollow handles since they tend to fall apart quickly, but this knife is a major exception to that rule. Being a single solid piece of steel, it can withstand very rough treatment while still holding a usable edge. The tools in the handle can be removed if you want to store other things like flint, tinder, fishing line, and so on. However, the sheath also has a removable pouch that could hold extras as well. 1070 steel does not hold the kind of edge 1095 can hold, but the extra toughness and durability of 1070 means it can take a lot more abuse or “unofficial” use (digging, hammering, prying) in a survival situation. It also sharpens up easily and is slightly more rust resistant. This is a no-frills heavy duty survival tool that can compete with knives twice the price. All of the knives in this series are bargains. Schrade has once again hit it out of the park!
